FUEL INJECTION / SYSTEM GUIDE

Electronic Unit Injectors & Unit Pumps

EUI, EUP, UPS, UIS and mechanical unit-injector system identification.

UNDERSTANDING THE TECHNOLOGY

WHAT THIS SYSTEM DOES

Unit-injection systems put pressure generation near or within each cylinder position rather than relying on one high-pressure common rail. Mechanical and electronic variants have different actuation, timing and diagnostic requirements.

A unit injector may use a mechanical driving event with electronic control of fuel delivery. A unit pump supplies a separate injector through a different architecture. Engine-side actuation and electrical wiring may be as important as the removed unit.

THE COMPONENT REVIEW STARTS HERE

Take the information below to your repair facility or DCT contact. Please do not remove, open or ship high-pressure fuel-system components without following the manufacturer’s safety instructions and receiving guidance.

COMPONENT IDENTIFICATION

FAMILIES & KEY PARTS.

These examples explain component identification and potential inquiry subjects, not universal on-site service coverage.

SYSTEM COMPONENTS

Electronic unit injectors (EUI)

These appear in multiple heavy-duty and industrial engine families.

  • Bosch and Delphi EUI designs
  • Cummins and Detroit Diesel EUI applications
  • Caterpillar mechanically actuated electronic unit injectors (MEUI)
  • Other heavy-duty and industrial electronic unit injection systems

SYSTEM COMPONENTS

Mechanical unit injectors (MUI)

Some engines use mechanically controlled unit injectors without the same electronics.

  • Detroit Diesel mechanical unit injectors
  • Other mechanically actuated unit injector families

SYSTEM COMPONENTS

Electronic unit pumps and parts

Closely related names can describe different systems.

  • Electronic unit pumps (EUP)
  • Unit pump systems (UPS) and unit injector systems (UIS)
  • Injector solenoids, control valves and plungers
  • Nozzles, seals and electrical connectors

DIAGNOSTICS, TESTING & SERVICE

What an informed evaluation should establish

  1. 01

Identify EUI versus EUP/UPS versus MUI before ordering parts or selecting a test.

  2. 02

Record injector numbers, engine family, cylinder position and applicable electronic data.

  3. 03

When feasible, distinguish electrical response from mechanical delivery and internal leakage.

  4. 04

Ask which component tests are supported and whether engine-side installation adjustments remain necessary.

Details to include in your inquiry

  • Injector or unit-pump part number, engine model and serial
  • Electronic diagnostic codes and cylinder-related observations
  • Quantity, cylinder locations and previous replacements
  • Installation or actuation findings already supplied by the repair shop

REPAIR, REBUILD OR REPLACE?

Only an eligible part, inspection or supported test can clarify the next step. DCT reviews feasibility, test capability, parts availability, pricing and return requirements before work is accepted or separately authorized.

Questions about Electronic Unit Injectors & Unit Pumps

Is an EUI the same as a common-rail injector?

No. The pressure-generation architecture is different, which changes how testing and diagnosis must be approached.

Are all unit injectors electronic?

No. Mechanical unit-injector designs also exist.

Can an EUI be evaluated off the engine?

Some families have supported component tests, but engine-side actuation and control may require separate assessment. Confirm eligibility before removal or shipping.

Confirm the exact unit before service

This technical guide describes possible component families, not a guarantee that every model can be tested, rebuilt, sourced or accepted. Work depends on actual parts, test equipment, procedures and staff review. Manufacturer references do not imply factory authorization.
