The shop that can reseal a mechanical rotary pump may not have the test plan for your electronic distributor pump. A specialist that handles modern common-rail units may not calibrate an older tractor pump. The right question isn't “Who rebuilds diesel p
An injection pump “rebuild” quote might cover new seals and a leak check. Another might cover teardown, inspection, supported internal parts and a full applicable calibration sequence. Both may use the word rebuild , but they aren't quoting the same work
“Repair this injector” sounds like one job. In reality, a shop may be quoting cleaning, a targeted internal repair, a full supported rebuild, or an exchange replacement. Those options can carry different testing, parts, downtime and warranty obligations.
Two diesel shops can both quote an “injector test” and mean very different things. One may check electrical continuity and visible leakage. Another may run several supported delivery and return-flow points, with a report that identifies each injector. Th
In a fleet, injector and pump failures aren't a question of if. With enough units and enough hours, some will fail. What a fleet controls is how long each failure keeps a unit out of service. The fleets that keep that time short do five things: they know
Most independent diesel shops don't bench test injectors or calibrate injection pumps in-house, and for good reason. Doing it properly takes specialized test equipment for each family of injectors and pumps, current test data, trained technicians and ste
When injectors fail once, it can be wear. When they fail again, something is killing them. Repeat injector failures usually trace to a cause outside the injector itself: contaminated fuel , poor filtration , low or aerated supply , leftover debris from a
When a diesel misfires, idles rough, knocks or smokes right after new injectors go in, the cause is usually something about the installation, not a defective injector. Check the ten items below before pulling the new injectors back out. Several of them c
Ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD), limited to 15 parts per million of sulfur, became the standard for highway diesel in the United States in 2006 and later for off-road, locomotive and marine fuel. The refining process that removes sulfur also removes some
Biodiesel blends are widely used, especially in farm country, and most modern diesels can run on common blends without trouble, provided the fuel meets its specification, the blend level is approved by the engine maker, and the fuel is stored and handled
