DENSO / Nippondenso HP4 Injection Pump Repair and Rebuilding

DENSO HP4 high-pressure fuel pump repair information. Understand L5P and other applications, contamination, diagnosis and identification.

More delivery capacity, same demand for precision. The DENSO HP4 is a common-rail supply pump built for work where fuel pressure has to keep up. Customers across the country can use our mail-in inquiry process to determine available testing, repair, rebuilding and calibration options for the exact unit.

What is the DENSO / Nippondenso HP4 system?

DENSO describes the HP4 as using similar operating principles to HP3 while employing three cylinders for higher delivery capacity in medium truck applications. That design difference makes identification essential. HP3 and HP4 are related in principle, not automatic replacement options for each other.

Common symptoms and what else to check

Starting trouble, rail-pressure faults, poor response under load and signs of contaminated fuel may trigger investigation. Similar symptoms can result from restricted supply or excessive injector return flow.

How to investigate a suspected HP4 pump problem

The exact DENSO number, engine and SCV type guide the evaluation path. Include any data captured under load, if a qualified technician obtained it safely.

Repair, rebuild or replacement: making the right call

Where service is available, determine whether the problem is internal wear, fuel metering, contamination or another system component before authorizing work.

How the HP4 Works

Denso calls the HP4 a supply pump, which undersells it. Its job is to keep the common rail at full injection pressure so the computer can fire each injector on command.

  1. The SCV meters fuel on the way in. Low-pressure fuel arrives and passes the suction control valve, which lets in only what the rail needs. The pump doesn’t waste effort compressing fuel it would just dump.
  2. Three plungers do the squeezing. A cam inside the pump drives them in turn, and each one compresses its share to rail pressure.
  3. The ECM closes the loop. A rail pressure sensor reports back, and the ECM adjusts the SCV to hit its target.
  4. Diesel lubricates the pump on its way through, so clean, dry fuel matters.

If the HP3 is a two-person bucket brigade, the HP4 adds a third person to the line: same buckets, about half again as much water per minute.

Shop Talk: SCV stands for suction control valve, Denso’s inlet metering valve. When it sticks, rail pressure wanders, and the engine lets you know with codes, surging or stalling.

The Duramax page shows every pump the Duramax has worn, and the John Deere page covers Deere’s lineup.

Did You Know? Denso was called Nippondenso until 1996, and it launched its first common-rail system in 1995 with a pump called the HP0. The HP4 grew from that same family tree.

Part Numbers We See

Denso HP4 numbers start 294050, followed by a four-digit suffix. 294050-0701, for example, is an L5P pump. The HP3 uses 294000-xxxx, so the two look alike at a glance; read every digit.

GM, Hino and John Deere also put their own numbers on the pump or its paperwork. The label is on the pump body. Photograph it before removal and send us whatever numbers you have.

Why HP4s Fail and the Symptoms

Not a CP4 doesn’t mean bulletproof. The HP4 has its own list of enemies:

  • Water in the fuel, which rusts and wears precision parts
  • Contaminated fuel, including DEF poured into the fuel tank
  • Air from running dry or a filter change without proper priming
  • A sticky or failing SCV, a familiar Denso trouble spot
  • A restricted filter or weak supply that starves the pump

If an HP4 does shed metal, the same rule applies as with any common-rail pump: debris travels downstream to the rail and injectors, so the whole system needs inspection.

Symptoms owners report:

  • Long crank or no start
  • Rail pressure codes such as P0087 (too low) or P0088 (too high)
  • Rough idle, surging or stalling, often SCV-related
  • Loss of power or a reduced-power mode
  • Glitter in the fuel filter

Not sure whether it’s the pump? Our hard start and smoke guide helps sort pump trouble from injector trouble.

Owner’s Tip: Drain the water separator and change filters on schedule. A scan tool that shows desired versus actual rail pressure gives you an early warning, and it never requires touching a high-pressure line.

Details that make a denso hp4 inquiry useful

An HP4 inquiry is strongest when it includes the complete DENSO and OEM numbers, engine details and a clear account of whether metallic debris was observed. Some applications use this family in high-pressure systems where a failing pump can affect more than the pump housing. If contamination is present, discuss the system-level repair plan before installing a replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Can a DENSO / Nippondenso HP4 injection pump be rebuilt?

In the DENSO / Nippondenso HP4 family, a pressure complaint does not automatically condemn the pump. Fuel supply and metering, electrical controls, injector return and possible contamination may all affect a valid diagnosis. Damage to precision pumping elements or debris across the system can change the appropriate service scope. Follow the engine manufacturer’s contamination remediation requirements where applicable. Review common-rail diagnosis.

Will a HP4 pump from another engine fit mine?

DENSO / Nippondenso HP4 fitment: High-pressure pumps may differ in drive and mounting arrangement, metering control, connectors, engine calibration and part-number suffix. Do not assume a pump from another application can simply be swapped in. The complete unit identification is the starting point. Compare exact pump families.

HP4: identify the application and look beyond the pressure code

The HP4 designation covers application-specific high-pressure equipment, not an interchangeable family of pumps. Review low-side supply, control strategy, component condition and potential contamination with reference to the actual engine generation and pump number.
