P0256–P0260: Injection Pump Fuel Metering Control B Faults

Understand pump metering control B performance, electrical low/high and intermittent codes on applicable diesel fuel systems.

A code is a clue.
A confirmed repair begins with the right evidence.

The letter B in a fuel metering fault should make a technician reach for the correct component diagram, not a generic part catalog. P0256–P0260 describe metering-control B malfunction, range/performance, low circuit, high circuit and intermittent behavior on systems that implement the second control designation. Some engines will never use these codes; on others they correspond to a monitored actuator or channel that must be distinguished from metering control A.

Why the exact system is essential

It is not safe to infer that an engine has two identical injection pumps or valves simply because a diagnostic label says “B.” A control channel may involve pump architecture or electronics not shared with another platform. The first diagnostic steps identify the monitored device, its electrical connections and the conditions under which the code can be set. From there, the distinction between a circuit failure and a performance issue guides testing.

What the five codes contribute

P0256 is a general malfunction designation. P0257 focuses on range/performance, P0258 on low circuit behavior, P0259 on high circuit behavior and P0260 on an intermittent condition. Depending on the vehicle, the complaint may involve hard starting, low power, abnormal fueling or another control consequence. A pressure code may accompany the metering DTC, but pressure alone cannot identify which channel or device failed.

The repair decision

After confirming supply quality and pressure as applicable, the technician verifies the correct power, ground, wiring and commanded response. If the result isolates an internal pump or metering issue, professional component evaluation may be appropriate. If the signal never reaches the component, removing the pump will not cure the vehicle. The most economical path is the one that proves where control is lost.

Frequently asked questions

Does metering control B mean the second pump on my diesel?

Not necessarily. It is a code designation, and the manufacturer determines the actual component and circuit relationship.

Is an intermittent P0260 always an internal pump fault?

No. External wiring, connector and control problems may produce intermittent metering behavior, as can component faults.

Keep exploring the right evidence

Codes guide a diagnosis but do not identify a failed pump or injector by themselves. Review nearby systems, compare the exact engine application, and seek qualified testing before deciding on a repair.
