Bosch P3000 Injection Pump Repair and Rebuilding

Bosch P3000 inline injection pump repair guidance for industrial and heavy-duty diesels. Understand pump numbers, governors and calibration needs.

The Bosch P3000 is one of the mechanical in-line names worth knowing when diesel equipment needs more than a generic fuel-pump fix. Customers across the country can use our mail-in inquiry process to determine available testing, repair, rebuilding and calibration options for the exact unit.

What is the Bosch P3000 system?

As part of the Bosch P-series in-line injection-pump group, P3000 equipment requires correct application identification, delivery data and control details. It should not be treated as a P7100 merely because both are P-series pumps. Check the complete Bosch number rather than relying on “P pump” as a universal description.

Common symptoms and what else to check

Aged seals, uneven operation, leakage, governor complaints and poor running may prompt investigation. Pump diagnosis should be considered alongside fuel supply, injectors, timing and engine condition.

How to investigate a suspected P3000 pump problem

Bench procedures and calibrated behavior depend on the full assembly number and relevant application data. Photos of the governor housing, control linkage, tag and drive end help identify the unit.

Repair, rebuild or replacement: making the right call

If parts and test data are available, the repair conversation can address worn components, sealing, control adjustment and final verification. Older installations require an honest serviceability check.

Other names and numbers to look for

The most useful search terms for this family include: Bosch P3000; Bosch P-series in-line injection pump; P3000 fuel pump.

BOSCH P3000 design, applications and diagnosis

How the Bosch P3000 Works

An inline pump is a small engine bolted to your engine: its own camshaft, plus six plungers in a row instead of pistons.

  1. Supply fuel fills a gallery running along all six plungers.

  2. The pump camshaft, turning at half crank speed, pushes each plunger up in firing order.

  3. A toothed control rack rotates all six plungers at once, setting how much fuel each stroke delivers.

  4. A delivery valve atop each barrel snaps shut after every shot, keeping the line primed.

  5. The governor on the back moves the rack in response to throttle and rpm.

Shop Talk: The helix is the slanted groove cut into each plunger. Rotate the plunger and the groove reaches the spill port sooner or later, so each stroke delivers less or more fuel. Your throttle, machined into steel.

What It Fits

Make and model Engine Years Notes
Cummins industrial and ag 6CT and 6CTA 8.3 The most common P3000 home
Cummins ISC and QSC 8.3 Many electronic ISCs use the Cummins CAPS pump instead
Case IH 2388 combine Cummins 8.3 Harvest workhorse
Massey Ferguson 30-series

Part Numbers We See

P3000 numbers start 0 402 036 or 0 402 066. The type code begins PES6P, followed by plunger size and governor letters such as RQVK or RSV.

P3000 or P7100? Read the Tag

Both are Bosch P-size inline pumps on Cummins sixes, and both get called a P-pump. The tag settles it: 0 402 036 or 0 402 066 means P3000; 0 402 736 means P7100. The P7100 got famous on Ram 12-valves. The P3000 earned its keep in fields and job sites. Mix them up and you get wrong parts and wrong calibration data.

Why P3000s Fail and the Symptoms

  • Hours and dust: worn plungers, barrels and delivery valves lose pressure and balance.

  • Water: farm tanks collect it, and it pits precision parts.

  • Long naps: a combine that sits ten months grows varnish that sticks the rack and governor.

  • Governor wear: tired flyweights and linkage make rpm wander.

  • Seals: old gaskets and O-rings weep fuel.

Symptoms:

  • Hard starting or long cranking

  • Black smoke under load, white smoke at startup

  • Low power in heavy crop

  • Hunting or surging rpm

  • A miss on one cylinder, or fuel leaks

Owner’s Tip: Before harvest, change the fuel filters, drain the water separator and check supply pressure with a gauge.

Details that make a bosch p3000 inquiry useful

A P3000 inquiry should include the pump’s complete PES number, the engine’s model and the equipment rating. Many owners first identify the engine as a Cummins 8.3 or by the machine brand, but that is not sufficient to establish the pump specification. Note any governor changes or performance adjustments, because they may affect the appropriate calibration reference.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Bosch P3000 injection pump be rebuilt?

The repair options for Bosch P3000 can range from an isolated defect to extensive inspection and rebuilding, depending on mechanical wear, governor condition, correct parts and the original calibration specification. Before replacement or adjustment, check whether the engine-side fuel supply and installation timing have been properly assessed. Learn about mechanical pump service.

Will a P3000 pump from another engine fit mine?

Bosch P3000 compatibility: Similar mounting flanges do not prove matching fuel delivery, governor behavior or application rating. Matching the exact build and engine requirements matters more than external appearance. Record the drive and control details along with the complete pump tag before removing or comparing units. Start with the pump directory.
