Diesel Injector Electrical Trouble Codes: When the Injector Doesn’t Get the Message

Decode P0201–P0208, injector circuit high/low, supply group, and driver module codes. Learn how wiring and control faults imitate failed injectors.

A code is a clue.
A confirmed repair begins with the right evidence.

A modern diesel injector is an exceptionally accurate mechanical device, but it also relies on a precisely timed electrical event. The engine controller and injector drivers determine when, and for how long, the injector should operate. If the current path, driver stage, supply voltage, connector, or injector electrical element does not behave as expected, the cylinder can lose its contribution even though the fuel supply and pump are capable of delivering pressure.

P0201–P0208 identify injector circuit faults by cylinder. The easiest temptation is to see P0204 and order an injector for cylinder four. That may eventually be the right repair, but it is not a diagnostic conclusion. The fault might live in the injector itself, a connector with poor terminal tension, a wire damaged by heat or vibration, a common supply or ground, or an injector driver. A cylinder-specific code tells you where the electronic control system noticed a problem; it does not guarantee which part of the circuit caused it.

Circuit low, circuit high, and performance are different clues

The P0261/P0264/P0267/P0270/P0273/P0276/P0279/P0282 family corresponds to injector circuit low faults across cylinders one through eight; the P0262/P0265/P0268/P0271/P0274/P0277/P0280/P0283 family corresponds to circuit high. P02EE–P02F5 describes cylinder-specific injector circuit range/performance monitoring on applicable systems. These should not be reduced to one generic “bad injector” diagnosis. The circuit state and driver-monitoring logic determine which checks matter.

Group supply codes P2146–P2157 can affect multiple cylinders because the fault is associated with an injector group circuit rather than a single injector. P062D/P062E address injector driver performance by bank; P0611 addresses fuel injector control module performance. In many vehicles, the safest and fastest diagnostic step is to determine whether the problem is individual or shared before removing any component.

What proper electrical diagnosis looks like

A technician studies the manufacturer’s driver strategy, wiring diagram, cylinder numbering, injector type, and test restrictions. The checks may include connector and harness inspection, appropriate circuit continuity and insulation testing, supply and ground verification, and controlled electrical measurements with equipment approved for that injector design. Never apply battery voltage to an unknown common-rail injector or improvise resistance and actuation tests; piezoelectric and solenoid systems have different electronics and damage risks.

If a new or exchanged injector is eventually installed, some vehicles require injector-specific coding or adaptation. Our injector coding guide explains why the programming step matters as much as the mechanical installation.

Code families and cylinder mapping

Code families and cylinder mapping
DTC or code family What the fault describes Diagnostic significance
P0201–P0208 Injector circuit faults, cylinders 1–8 Investigate individual injector electrical paths, connectors, wiring and drivers before condemnation.
P02EE–P02F5 Injector circuit range/performance, cylinders 1–8 Injector electrical response or driver calibration did not behave as expected; architecture-dependent.
P0261, P0264, P0267, P0270, P0273, P0276, P0279, P0282 Injector circuit low, cylinders 1–8 Electrical low-input or low-circuit family; diagnose the relevant circuit rather than the nozzle.
P0262, P0265, P0268, P0271, P0274, P0277, P0280, P0283 Injector circuit high, cylinders 1–8 Electrical high-input or high-circuit family; verify actual driver and harness interpretation.
P0200 Fuel injector circuit malfunction, nonspecific cylinder Injector circuit detected without cylinder-specific isolation; shared wiring and driver problems matter.
P0611 Fuel injector control module performance Module performance detected; verify voltage, grounds, communications and circuit loads.
P2146, P2149, P2152, P2155 Injector group supply circuit open, groups A–D A shared supply-group issue may affect more than one cylinder.
P2147, P2150, P2153, P2156 Injector group supply circuit low, groups A–D Identify group membership and driver architecture in the OEM schematic.
P2148, P2151, P2154, P2157 Injector group supply circuit high, groups A–D A shared high-state fault may generate multiple injector symptoms.
P062D, P062E Fuel injector driver performance, banks 1–2 Bank-level driver concern; rule out power, wiring and connected loads before module replacement.

Continue with P0201–P0208, injector electrical low/high codes, P2146–P2157, and P0611. For suspected injector failure, speak with our team about applicable electrical or component testing before committing to a replacement.

Keep exploring the right evidence

Codes guide a diagnosis but do not identify a failed pump or injector by themselves. Review nearby systems, compare the exact engine application, and seek qualified testing before deciding on a repair.
