Standby Diesel Generator Starts but Fails Under Load

Understand why a generator can pass a short start yet fail during transfer or load testing.

Field Guides / Plants, standby power & public equipment

A standby generator that starts on command but cannot accept load has not demonstrated readiness. Fuel supply restriction, air intake, cooling, engine protection, control configuration and mechanical load can all be involved. Injection pump and injector problems are possibilities, but they should not be blamed without measuring how the engine and generator respond during the failed exercise. Critical facility operators should follow the approved emergency-power maintenance program.

What the symptoms or question actually mean

The timing matters: a collapse immediately after load transfer differs from a gradual stall after a sustained run. Watch frequency and voltage response along with engine RPM, fuel pressure and alarms where qualified personnel can safely record them. An electrical load or transfer-control problem can imitate a mechanical engine problem. A no-load weekly start is not equivalent to a validated loaded readiness test.

What to check and document

Record generator make, engine and pump tag, hours, maintenance intervals, load bank or actual facility load, engine fault history, fuel supply/return arrangement and storage-tank history. Use trained generator technicians for any electrical, transfer switch or load-bank work. If low fuel pressure or injection behavior is suspected, test according to the OEM engine procedure without opening high-pressure lines while running.

How to make the repair or operating decision

Distinguish the component service question from the facility's emergency-power certification. A verified injection pump defect may justify specialized testing, but the component test does not validate the switchgear, alternator, fuel storage or total standby system. Coordinated post-repair testing must be completed under the site's applicable maintenance and regulatory plan.

Prevent avoidable repeat work

Keep load-test findings and corrective actions with facility compliance records. Schedule fuel sampling, filtration reviews and exercise routines appropriate to the installation rather than assuming that low engine hours mean low risk.

Practical checklist

  • Document exact load and run time before failure.
  • Capture engine and generator alarms together.
  • Inspect storage fuel quality and low-pressure feed.
  • Use qualified electrical and engine technicians.
  • Repeat an approved loaded readiness test after repair.

Before returning critical equipment to service

Follow the facility's lockout, operating and emergency-readiness procedures. Record load, run duration, fuel storage history, alarms and maintenance dates. A component evaluation cannot by itself certify a generator, pump station, fire-protection installation or other complete standby system.

Frequently asked question

Does a generator that starts every week prove it will power the building?

No. Starting alone does not demonstrate performance at required load or proper transfer. Follow applicable manufacturer guidance, facility procedures and any governing code requirements for loaded testing.
