Simms names like Minimec, Majormec, Maximec and SPE are familiar to many owners of older agricultural and industrial diesels. Mechanical injection may look straightforward, but precise governor and delivery settings still matter.
Identifying Simms inline pump designs
A pump that sat through years of storage may show leakage, sticking or contaminated fuel. A running engine with smoke or poor throttle response may also have supply and engine-side causes.

Simms history, identification and practical service questions
Inline and Vintage: Simms and CAV
Before rotary pumps took over, CAV and Simms built inline pumps: one plunger per cylinder, lined up like soldiers, each pushed by its own lobe on a camshaft inside the pump. These are the pumps on tractors, trucks and stationary engines that have outlived several owners, and many still rebuild well when the housing and camshaft are sound.
Simms Minimec (CAV Minimec, Lucas Minimec)
The Minimec is the inline pump most owners mean when they search "Ford 5000 injection pump." It is associated with selected Ford and related agricultural and industrial engines, including some Ford 5000 applications. Use the exact engine and pump codes to establish fitment rather than assuming that every Ford tractor of the period used a Minimec. It replaced CAV’s older N and AA pumps. Look for a Simms P-number such as P4666. Read the full Simms Minimec repair page or our Massey Ferguson and Ford tractor guide.
Simms SPE (SPE4A, SPE6A, SPGE)
A Bosch-pattern inline pump built by Simms for Ford and Fordson tractors, Nuffield and BMC industrial engines, and the Ford Dorset and Dover engines. The code reads like a sentence: SPE, then the cylinder count, then the size letter, so an SPE6A is a six-cylinder A-size pump. SPGE is a close relative. For an uncommon unit, include the complete pump code and engine information in your repair inquiry.
CAV and Simms Majormec
The Majormec is a larger inline pump that replaced the CAV NN. The Majormec identification should be recorded in full because model-specific application details vary across older equipment. For an uncommon unit, include the complete pump code and engine information in your repair inquiry.
CAV and Simms Maximec
Introduced in 1977, the Maximec is an inline pump for four to twelve cylinders, rated to about 1,000 bar (about 14,500 psi) and built for large truck diesels. It is the muscle of the Simms-era inline lineup. For an uncommon unit, include the complete pump code and engine information in your repair inquiry.
Where Simms and CAV terminology overlaps
The historical relationship between Simms, CAV and Lucas means that some equipment records use more than one company name. That history is useful for searching, but a CAV BPE, N, NN or AA is not automatically the same pump as a Simms Minimec, Majormec, Maximec or SPE. For the CAV-specific families and their identification details, use the CAV and Lucas reference.
