Not every diesel injection system has one big pump doing every cylinder’s work. In a unit-pump arrangement, individual pumping units share the job – and each must be identified correctly. Customers across the country can use our mail-in inquiry process to determine available testing, repair, rebuilding and calibration options for the exact unit.
What is the Bosch PLD system?
Bosch PLD is associated with unit-pump injection systems. Unlike a conventional single distributor pump, a unit-pump architecture uses a pumping unit for each cylinder together with appropriate injection hardware and controls. The terms PLD, EUP and unit pump may overlap in discussions but do not prove an identical part. If several unit pumps are removed, label each by cylinder location and record the original arrangement before shipping.
Common symptoms and what else to check
Rough running, cylinder-specific fuel-delivery faults, leakage, or electronic actuation concerns may justify checks. Wiring, injector/nozzle hardware, and engine controls can be part of the same diagnosis.
How to investigate a suspected PLD pump problem
Send the unit number and engine designation, plus the quantity of units and their positions if known. Any electrical or bench procedure must be appropriate for that specific individual unit.
Repair, rebuild or replacement: making the right call
Availability of testing and component-level repair depends on the particular PLD design. Treat a unit pump differently from a common-rail supply pump or a mechanical P7100.

How the PLD Unit Pump Works
PLD is German shorthand for pump, line, nozzle. That’s the whole layout in three words.
- Each cylinder’s unit pump bolts into the engine block and rides a lobe on the engine camshaft through a roller tappet.
- A solenoid valve on the pump stays open as the plunger rises, so fuel just spills back to supply.
- When the computer closes the solenoid, trapped fuel can only go up the short high-pressure line. Pressure spikes and the nozzle opens.
- When the computer opens the solenoid again, pressure collapses and injection stops.
When the valve closes sets timing; how long it stays closed sets quantity. It’s like pumping a bike tire through a split hose: nothing happens until your thumb seals the split. The solenoid is the thumb.
Pump-Line-Nozzle vs. Unit Injector
PLD is not PD or PDE, though the letters trip people up all the time. They’re cousins, not twins.
| Design | Where the pumping happens | What drives it | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pump-line-nozzle (PLD, EUP) | Unit pump in the block, short line to a separate nozzle in the head | Engine camshaft in the block | MBE 900, MBE 4000, Mack E7 E-Tech |
| Unit injector (PD, PDE, EUI) | Pump and nozzle in one body, mounted in the head | Overhead cam or rocker arm | Detroit Series 60, VW PD TDI |
Shop Talk: Unit just means self-contained. A PLD pump is serviced at the block and its nozzle is a separate part. A unit injector is one piece, and an injector repair job.
What It Fits
| Make and model | Engine | Years | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freightliner Business Class M2 and FL-series, Sterling Acterra | MBE 900 (MBE 904, MBE 906) | Medium-duty | |
| Thomas Saf-T-Liner C2 | MBE 900 | School bus | |
| Freightliner Custom Chassis motorhomes | MBE 900 | Diesel pushers | |
| Freightliner Century Class, Columbia, Coronado, Argosy | MBE 4000 | Heavy-duty | |
| Mack CH, CX Vision and Granite | Mack E7 and E-Tech with EUP | To about 2006 | Earlier E7s used a P8500 inline pump |
Part Numbers We See
| Number pattern | Application |
|---|---|
| Bosch 0 414 799 xxx | Mercedes MBE 900 and MBE 4000 |
| Bosch 0 414 755 xxx | Mack E7 and E-Tech EUP |
| Bosch 0 986 445 xxx | Bosch reman unit pumps |
The Bosch label sits on the pump body, sometimes with a Mercedes, Detroit or Mack number. Send us that number plus the engine serial.
Owner’s Tip: Two safe checks first: run a cylinder cut-out test with your diagnostic software, and watch the oil level. Oil that climbs between changes and smells like diesel deserves a closer look.
Why PLD Unit Pumps Fail and the Symptoms
- Solenoid trouble. Coils open, short or stick, and the computer logs a code for that cylinder.
- Worn plungers. Grit and water wear the plunger and barrel until the pump can’t build pressure.
- Tired O-rings. Unit pumps seal to the block with O-rings, and hardened ones can leak fuel outside or into the crankcase.
- Roller tappet wear. The roller and cam lobe take a pounding every revolution.
Symptoms:
- Misfire or rough running on one cylinder
- Cylinder cut-out or solenoid circuit codes
- Hard starting or long cranking
- White smoke at idle or black smoke under load
- A rising oil level that smells of fuel
Bench Notes: When one pump fails from age, its neighbors have the same miles. Testing each suspect unit, when feasible, helps decide whether one cylinder or a full set needs attention.
Details that make a bosch pld inquiry useful
Bosch PLD unit pumps should be identified by their own complete numbers as well as the engine serial number. Keep units labeled by cylinder position if several are removed, and describe whether the original complaint was a single-cylinder miss or a broader fueling problem. A PLD unit pump is not the same component as a complete electronic unit injector, even though the names are sometimes confused.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Bosch PLD injection pump be rebuilt?
Whether Bosch PLD is a good repair candidate depends on sound housings, wear on precision components, the correct service parts and reliable model-specific test information. A leak, sticking from storage, or debris in the fuel may point to very different work. The right recommendation follows the evidence on the identified assembly—not the appearance of a similar pump. Discuss the exact unit.
Will a PLD pump from another engine fit mine?
The answer depends on the full assembly and engine specification. Units that share a general pump type can differ in delivery, mounting or control details. Keep every removed component labeled and verify the exact part before substitution.
