Cummins PT Type G & Type R Injection Pump Repair and Rebuilding

Cummins PT Type G and Type R pump repair guidance. Understand the pressure-time system, governor symptoms and engine identification.

Long before common rail became the everyday buzzword, Cummins pressure-time equipment was already proving that fuel delivery is all about managing the details. Customers across the country can use our mail-in inquiry process to determine available testing, repair, rebuilding and calibration options for the exact unit.

What is the Cummins PT Type G & Type R system?

PT means “pressure-time” in Cummins fuel-system terminology. PT Type G and PT Type R are identifiers in the family directory. They are not Bosch CP-series common-rail pressure pumps, and their service procedures are specific to the PT architecture. If you know only “PT fuel pump,” include whether the tag says Type G, Type R, or another complete designation.

Common symptoms and what else to check

Starting, idle, throttle response, governor or fuel-delivery issues may prompt investigation. The correct diagnosis also considers supply, filters, adjustment history, injector condition and the engine application.

How to investigate a suspected PT Type G / Type R pump problem

Provide the PT pump identification number, engine information and description of any prior governor or pressure adjustments. A model-specific evaluation helps distinguish a pump fault from a system or settings problem.

Repair, rebuild or replacement: making the right call

Repair and test availability depend on the complete variant, condition and technical support. Avoid making ad hoc adjustments based on readings or procedures from unrelated diesel systems.

Other names and numbers to look for

The most useful search terms for this family include: Cummins PT; Cummins pressure-time pump; PT Type G; PT Type R; Cummins PTG pump.

CUMMINS PT design, applications and diagnosis

How the Cummins PT Pump Works

Fill a bucket with a garden hose. How much water you get depends on two things: how hard the water’s coming out and how long you hold the hose over the bucket. That’s pressure-time, and it’s the whole trick behind PT.

  1. A gear pump pulls fuel from the tank and pushes it through the PT pump.
  2. The governor and throttle shaft set the pressure the pump sends to the supply passage that feeds every injector.
  3. Each injector has a tiny metering orifice. The engine camshaft, through a pushrod and rocker, moves the injector plunger to uncover that orifice for a slice of each cycle.
  4. Fuel flows into the injector cup during that window. Pressure times time equals fuel.
  5. The plunger drives down and forces the metered fuel into the cylinder at high pressure.

The faster the engine turns, the shorter that window gets, so the pump must deliver the right pressure at every rpm and throttle position. That’s why calibration matters.

Shop Talk: AFC stands for air-fuel control. It senses intake manifold boost and holds back fuel until the turbo spools up, so the engine doesn’t belch black smoke every time you step on it. The no-air setting decides how much fuel it allows with zero boost.

Part Numbers We See

PT pumps carry a dataplate with the Cummins part number and a pump code. The pump code matters most, because it points to the calibration your pump should run. The ESN and CPL on the engine dataplate back it up.

Owner’s Tip: Low power isn’t always the pump. Change the fuel filter, look for air leaks on the suction side and check the wire to the fuel shutoff valve. A restricted suction line can starve even a perfect pump.

Why PT Pumps Fail and the Symptoms

  • Gear pump wear. Less pressure means less fuel and less pull.
  • Governor wear. Weights, springs and plungers wear, and idle or top speed wanders.
  • Throttle shaft leaks. Worn shaft seals weep fuel.
  • AFC trouble. A failed AFC seal or sticking parts bring black smoke on acceleration or a lazy engine.
  • Fuel shutoff valve failure. A bad solenoid means no start, or an engine that won’t shut off.
  • Dirty fuel and age. Grit and water wear everything they touch.

Symptoms:

  • Low power or poor pulling on grades
  • Black smoke on acceleration
  • Hard starting or no start
  • Hunting or surging idle
  • Won’t shut off with the key
  • Fuel leaks around the throttle shaft or pump body

Bench Notes: You can’t judge a PT pump by looks. Calibration means checking pressure and flow at set speeds and throttle positions, including idle and AFC settings. That’s what the bench is for.

Details that make a cummins pt inquiry useful

Cummins PT service questions begin with the engine serial number, CPL and the pump’s complete identifier. Describe any governor hunting, poor throttle response, load complaint or fuel leakage, and note whether the pump has an air-fuel-control arrangement. The PT system works together with cam-driven injectors, so pump and injector condition may both contribute to a performance complaint.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Cummins PT Type G & Type R injection pump be rebuilt?

The repair options for Cummins PT Type G & Type R can range from an isolated defect to extensive inspection and rebuilding, depending on mechanical wear, governor condition, correct parts and the original calibration specification. Before replacement or adjustment, check whether the engine-side fuel supply and installation timing have been properly assessed. Learn about mechanical pump service.

Will a PT Type G / Type R pump from another engine fit mine?

Cummins PT Type G & Type R compatibility: Similar mounting flanges do not prove matching fuel delivery, governor behavior or application rating. Matching the exact build and engine requirements matters more than external appearance. Record the drive and control details along with the complete pump tag before removing or comparing units. Start with the pump directory.
