Injection Pump Rebuild Quote: What’s Included?

An injection pump “rebuild” quote might cover new seals and a leak check. Another might cover teardown, inspection, supported internal parts and a full applicable calibration sequence. Both may use the word rebuild, but they aren’t quoting the same work. Before choosing the lower number, make the scope visible.

Mechanical rotary, mechanically governed inline, electronic distributor and modern common-rail high-pressure pumps require different service methods. The number on the full pump identification tag—not just the engine brand—decides what tests and parts can apply.

First: send the tag, not just the truck model

Photograph the complete pump tag, its installed position and any relevant controls or electrical connectors. Include engine/equipment identification, the actual starting or power complaint, prior pump work and any on-engine supply measurements. Our pump identification guide shows what to record.

A shop should confirm that it supports the exact pump number before you remove or ship it. A similar-looking housing is not proof of compatible calibration or replacement parts.

What kind of work does the estimate buy?

Work quoted What you should expect What it does not necessarily prove
Intake or as-received evaluation Identified condition and supported findings That internal repair is already approved
Reseal Correction of designated external leaks Correct metering, timing, governor or rail performance
Targeted repair A supported fix for a documented defect That unrelated worn parts have been restored
Rebuild Agreed internal work and applicable final verification That every pump design can be rebuilt
Exchange A different, correctly matched unit with core terms That the original pump will be repaired or returned

A resealed pump can stop leaking yet remain out of delivery specification. A clean casting is not evidence of good calibration. See what actually happens during a pump rebuild for the mechanical process.

Calibration must match the pump family

On a mechanical inline pump, final checks may include delivery at rated and low-speed points, outlet balance and governor behavior. A rotary distributor pump has its own delivery and advance requirements. An electronic distributor pump adds command and electronic-function questions. A common-rail high-pressure pump is not calibrated like a pump that meters and distributes a timed shot to each cylinder.

Ask: Which specific final checks will be documented for this pump number? Our guide to pump calibration explains why a leak-free pump and a correctly tested pump are two different outcomes.

Before repair, agree on possible outcomes

Does inspection require a charge if the pump passes its initial checks? Does the shop call before internal work starts? What happens if a precision part is not available, the housing is cracked or severe corrosion makes restoration unreliable? Is an exchange or new unit an option, and what happens to the old core?

Get the return packaging, shipping charges and warranty terms in writing. Ask whether the claimed delivery time starts on arrival, inspection approval or parts receipt; do not mistake bench time for total machine downtime.

The engine may still need more work

A blocked filter, air ingress, weak lift pump, wiring issue, or defective engine-side control can imitate pump failure. A correctly calibrated pump will not solve those faults. If a high-pressure pump sheds metal, follow the exact engine maker’s contamination procedure. Replacing the pump alone may leave debris that damages the next unit.

Ask who handles engine-side timing, sealing, installation and post-repair verification. Those responsibilities are normally separate from a mail-in component quote unless confirmed otherwise.

Five questions that make estimates comparable

  1. Is the full pump number supported by your test stand and service process?
  2. Does this price cover evaluation, reseal, defined repair, full rebuild or exchange?
  3. What failed and what final measurements will prove the work?
  4. What are the approval, nonrepairable, return, core and warranty terms?
  5. What is the total schedule including local removal, transit, bench work and installation?

Ask DCT what your pump rebuild quote covers

Diesel Control Technicians can review a pump rebuild inquiry when you provide the complete tag photo, engine details, symptoms and available supply-side readings. Start a mail-in component review and ask what inspection, repair, calibration, timing and written approval would mean for your exact pump number.
